As U.S. Supreme Court Reviews Clean Power Plan, Northwest will Continue Leading the Way to Clean Energy Future

Tuesday, February 9, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a stay on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan pending further review and a final legal decision.

We support the Clean Power Plan and are optimistic it will withstand the objections of its detractors upon thorough review by the Supreme Court.

“The region is already undergoing a transition away from fossil fuels toward clean renewable resources – a transition supported by business leaders across the country and a substantial majority of the people throughout the Northwest,” said Rachel Shimshak, Executive Director of Renewable Northwest.

What we cannot put on hold “…is the need to address climate change and embrace Montana’s energy future,” Montana Governor Steve Bullock said in response to announcement of the stay.

In Oregon, House Bill 4036, the Clean Electricity and Coal Transition Plan, is an example of the ongoing effort to reduce dependence on coal and develop new renewable resources.

Under consideration by the state legislature now, HB 4036 would ensure Oregon electricity is coal free and the amount of renewable energy in the mix is doubled to 50% by 2040.

The Northwest is a national leader in renewable energy and preservation of our environment. Policies like the Clean Electricity and Coal Transition Plan ensure we continue to lead the way.
