Renewable Northwest Announces LEED® Gold Certification

Portland, Ore. -The region’s leading renewable energy advocacy group, Renewable Northwest , announced today that its office has been LEED® Gold certified. The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance.

Said Rachel Shimshak, executive director at Renewable Northwest, “It is important to us that Renewable Northwest set a positive example in building a sustainable future by reducing our environmental impact. Achieving LEED certification is a testament to our commitment to addressing global climate change, one of the greatest challenges of our time.”

Renewable Northwest ’s work space achieved LEED Gold as a result of implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. These strategies included optimizing the office’s lighting system for increased energy efficiency, creative space design, and the purchase of renewable power to directly support a clean energy future.

Added David Wolf, Renewable Northwest’s administrative director who managed the LEED certification process at the office, “It’s an honor to announce this achievement with the US Green Building Council. This was a driving factor in our recent search for a new location and we are already enjoying the benefits of a green, sustainable office in which to advocate for renewable energy.”

LEED is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. Over 44,000 projects are currently participating in the commercial and institutional LEED rating systems, comprising over 8 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 states and 120 countries.
