Renewable Northwest Joins Celebration of BPA 75th Anniversary

Just as the creation of BPA's world-renowned federal hydro system brought jobs, economic vitality and clean energy to benefit our region, BPA's efforts to include new renewable resources into our electricity supply—such as solar, wind and geothermal - have continued the Northwest legacy of harnessing abundant diverse, clean resources to benefit regional customers. As we celebrate BPA's past and present accomplishments, we look forward to future opportunities to benefit our region's economy, communities and environment.

We live in an exciting time: coal plants are transitioning to cleaner, less risky options. Growing industries, including electric vehicles and smart grid technology, are reshaping our region's energy use and the systems that support it.

We also live amid an urgent time, where tangible sever weather impacts and global scientific consensus on climate change threats have caused the U.S. Military, Department of Defense, economists, and environmentalists to collectively seek clean energy solutions.

The region now boasts 6,300 megawatts of new renewable resources operating in the Northwest in addition to our awesome record of implementing energy efficiency. Our region is blessed with a rich endowment of clean energy resources. By diversifying our supply, we have boosted our regional economy by billions, brought vitality to hard-hit rural economies, and prevented millions of tons of pollution annually from harming our environment and climate.

BPA and Northwest communities have much to celebrate, but many challenges exist. New renewables- including wind, solar, geothermal and biomass - comprise only about 5% of the energy consumed in the Northwest, still far outweighed by fossil fuel generation. As BPA celebrates its landmark anniversary, we look forward to continuing our partnership with the region's stakeholders to identify and deploy solutions that fully seize our region's renewable energy potential and related economic, workforce and environmental benefits.

Cheers to you, Bonneville, on 75 years of accomplishment, and many more to come.
