Nine Canyon Wind Project Phase II Expansion Complete

Construction is now complete on the expansion of Nine Canyon Wind Project, southeast of Kennewick, Wash. The project is owned and operated by Energy Northwest, a state chartered joint operating agency headquartered in Richland, Wash.

The 12 new wind turbines officially entered commercial operation at noon on December 31, 2003. Power generation began at Phase II in late September 2003.
The new turbines join 37 others that have been producing renewable energy since September 2002. Each of the 49 turbines, manufactured by the Danish firm Bonus A/S, have the capacity to produce 1.3 megawatts of electricity. The total capacity increases from 48.1 megawatts to 63.7 megawatts with the completion of Phase II. Nine Canyon Wind Project is one of the largest public power wind projects in the nation.
The general contractor, Renewable Energy Systems, met the demanding construction schedule, in spite of high winds during much of the fall. Benton County PUD built the electrical substation for the site, along with transmission lines that tie the project into the existing Bonneville Power Administration transmission system.
"The performance of Bonus, RES and Benton PUD has been superb," said Jack Baker, Energy Northwest's vice president for Energy/Business Services. "They have given us a project that the region can be proud of."
The purchasing utilities for power from the expansion are Okanogan County PUD, Douglas County PUD, Chelan County PUD, Grays Harbor County PUD and Mason County PUD No. 3.
