Solopower Reaffirms Commitment To Oregon, Announces Intent To Locate Solar Panel Manufacturing Facility In Portland

SoloPower, Inc., a California-based manufacturer of flexible, thin film solar cells and modules, announced that it has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the City of Portland to locate a high volume manufacturing facility in Portland.

“We are committed to Oregon because of the great people and workforce; the active support and engagement at the state level and from the communities we have talked to; and of course, Oregon’s beauty, location and quality of life,” said SoloPower CEO Tim Harris. “This is where we want to be.”

SoloPower had originally announced its intention to locate its Oregon manufacturing facility in Wilsonville, and had reached an agreement with that city which included the establishment of a single-site Urban Renewal District as a key part of the agreement; however, a citizen group has circulated a petition for a referendum on that decision. As a result, SoloPower began evaluating other options.

“The shift to Portland is in no way the fault of Wilsonville’s and Clackamas County’s leadership: they worked hard and in good faith to bring this economic asset home,” said Harris.

Portions of the agreement with Portland are subject to a vote by the City Council, which is expected to take place on May 18.
